Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pilates isn't a fitness trend. It's a total-body reconditioning system developed by Joseph Pilates during World War I. Built on principles like control, concentration, centering, breath, and precision, it's designed to make your body more efficient, functional, and strong from the inside out. The work can help decompress the spine, improve joint range of motion, lengthen and strengthen muscles, re-pattern how your nervous system moves your body, and much more. Because Pilates was designed for the individual, private lessons are the foundation. Classes supplement what your body has already learned.

  • Your first session begins with a conversation. You'll meet Rachel, review your intake form, and talk about what's going on in your body and what you're hoping to achieve. From there, you'll start with foundational breathing exercises, then move to exercises or elements specific to your body. You'll leave with homework and next steps you can write down in your own words. (A notebook is strongly recommended, you get the most out of what you write yourself than from a printed sheet.) Sessions are 55 minutes from your scheduled start time.

  • Form-fitting, solid black clothing (no prints or designs). ITM shirts are welcome and encouraged. Bare feet. Hair up and off the neck. Minimal jewelry. Skip the lotion and perfume. Lotions can damage the equipment vinyl, and scents can be distracting in a focused environment. Men wearing looser shorts should wear fitted shorts or a dance belt underneath. And please wear deodorant.

The dress code isn't arbitrary: removing visual distractions helps both you and your teacher see alignment more clearly.

  • Not yet, and here's why: different teachers and lineages use different cues, goals, and approaches. Jumping into a class without knowing how we work (or without us knowing your body) could lead to injury. We need to understand what's going on in your body before we can effectively support or correct you in class.

If you've studied the Fletcher lineage specifically, please call the studio for a brief phone consultation to determine where you should begin.

  • That depends entirely on your body and what it needs; similar to massage therapy. Some issues resolve relatively quickly. Others require peeling back layers to get to the root cause, which can reveal new areas that need attention.

  • Private lessons are entirely for your body. Your needs, your pace, your progression.

Semi-private and triplet lessons are available once you've reached a level where working alongside one or two other students at a similar stage would genuinely benefit everyone involved. Not just provide a workout, but deepen the work.

Classes are for students who have been studying consistently and are ready to be challenged with greater independence. Class participants know their bodies, how to modify or ask for help when needed, and are progressing together over time. Classes move at a quicker pace and build the stamina that private work refines.

For most students, a combination of all three types — once the body is ready — produces the best and most lasting results.

  • If you are good at homework, you can study Pilates once a week with a teacher and still produce results; they'll just take more time.  Ultimately for best results you would study Pilates 2-4 times per week between lessons and classes.

  • Sessions are tailored to your specific injury or pain needs and may include: myofascial release, ART (Active Release Technique), active and passive stretching, deep tissue cross-fiber friction, craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation, therapeutic touch, sound therapy, cupping, lymphatic drainage, nerve gliding, and/or reflexology.

  • ITM is a private, self-pay facility. We do not accept insurance.
